Patrick Daniel
President and CEO, Enbridge Inc.
Under Pat Daniel's skilled stewardship, Enbridge has emerged as one of the biggest energy players in the world. Daniel continued to expand the footprint of his Calgary-based company by signing an alliance with PetroChina International Co. to build the proposed $2.5-billion Gateway Pipeline between Edmonton and the west coast for oilsands exports to Asia. Enbridge also stretched its network south in November, paying $613 million US for Shell's natural gas pipeline network off the coast of Louisiana and Mississippi, establishing Enbridge as a major natural gas transporter in the Gulf of Mexico. In the meantime, Enbridge continued to wage a fight in Ottawa with its crosstown rival TransCanada Corp. over which company will build the Canadian portion of the proposed $20-billion US Alaska gas pipeline. In addition to his duties with Enbridge, the chemical engineer also sits on the board of directors of EnCana Corporation. Daniel also finds time for several not-for-profit commitments, including raising money for the United Way, STARS Air Ambulance and the Alberta Heart Institute. - WG
Which project is more important to Enbridge: the Gateway Pipeline to the west coast or the Alaska gas pipeline?
Gateway is the more important of the two, in part because it is more immediate than Alaska and because it is an Enbridge original idea. As a result, we probably feel a little more committed to that. But we're still strongly committed to Alaska, too.
Who do you think is the greatest Albertan ever?
I would cast my vote for Alexander Rutherford, the first premier of the province of Alberta. He was the founding father of the University of Alberta and was a huge community contributor.
In 100 years, will you warrant your own chapter in the history books, a footnote to great events or a single Google hit?
None of the above, because I'm sure I won't warrant a chapter in a history book and I don't know if Google will be around in 100 years. I know I'm not going to be the same category as Alexander Rutherford, that's for sure.
