Randy Klapstein
CEO, Pointe of View Developments Inc.
Together with the City of Calgary and a consortium of private sector companies, Pointe of View Developments CEO Randy Klapstein, 49, is creating an even greater imprint on the landscape of Calgary with the redevelopment of the city's East Village. The projected multi-billion dollar transformation of this sleepy area over the next 20 years into a vibrant, mixed residential and commercial neighbourhood along a scenic canal is touted to be one of North America's largest inner-city revival projects. Klapstein has already earned considerable admiration in Calgary for his stewardship of his company, the largest multi-family developer in Alberta, capturing more than 35% of Calgary's 5,000 multi-family housing starts in 2003. Pointe of View currently holds 10,000 units' worth of land in development in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, California and Arizona with projects soon to begin in Denver. Klapstein's effective work has landed his company on Alberta Venture
's Fastest Growing Companies list several years running, proudly boasting a 129% three-year sales increase from 2001 to 2004. - DH
A city's downtown core embodies the heritage and character of a city. What is your vision for the East Village? And how will it change the demographic makeup of the area?
I think East Village has a great opportunity to be an exciting part of downtown. I think the more people that move into downtown, the more vibrant our downtown is going to be.
Who do you think is the greatest Albertan ever?
Premier Manning was someone who came to mind. I think he was a good leader. He was there for a long time and he was a leader that seemed to take the province a long ways and he seemed to be a very moral citizen.
In 100 years, will you warrant your own chapter in the history books, a footnote to great events or a single Google hit?
I don't think that's really up to me to say. I guess it depends on what we really accomplish over the next decade or so.
