Canada’s new work and business magazine has Unlimited potential
Edmonton, Alberta (June 1, 2007) – Venture Publishing Inc. will be launching its newest title in September 2007 -- Unlimited, a magazine focusing on work and business issues for readers in the 20- to 35-year-old age bracket. This demographic, largely the children of baby boomers, have a dramatically different outlook than previous generations. These emerging professionals, employees and entrepreneurs need their own magazine. The name Unlimited speaks to the boundless opportunities young Albertans have to shape their own lives, their communities, and their world. Large in number and large in ambition, they want balance and meaning and fulfillment in their working lives. They want to make a significant mark without leaving a huge footprint. Unlimited (tagline: Expand Your Life’s Work) wants to share their stories and to inspire others to follow suit (though not necessarily while wearing suits). Province-wide, although with content and distribution that pokes beyond Alberta’s boundaries to reflect today’s borderless work world, Unlimited will launch with a bimonthly publishing frequency and a dynamic online presence. “This is a truly unique product whose time has come,” says Ruth Kelly, publisher and editor-in-chief of Venture Publishing. “With Alberta’s economy as red-hot as it is, and the youngest population in Canada, it’s time our next generation of business leaders had a publication that reflected their issues in the workplace and beyond. Moreover, we’re confident that Unlimited will have appeal beyond our borders, so the idea of an Albertan magazine with a national audience is thrilling.” Unlimited will be helmed by associate publisher Joyce Byrne, editor Dan Rubinstein and art director Malcolm Brown. “Bringing Malcolm Brown on board adds award-winning design to the Unlimited team,” says Byrne, a veteran of the Toronto magazine scene and former publisher of This Magazine. “Brown’s great eye, particularly with text and photography, means exciting things will be happening on the page, and beyond the page at unlimitedmagazine.com. We’re sensitive to the fact that this audience demands interactive, high-quality content online and we have some terrific things up our sleeve.” “I feel Unlimited is the right mag at the right time – for me and the country,” says Brown, whose distinctive designs have defined the look of national magazines such as enRoute, Outpost, Shift and Adbusters, earning multiple National Magazine Awards. “I believe this magazine will be a culmination of all my previous work to date. The larger format, strong budgets and creative fearlessness all work for me. It should come as no surprise that such a magazine would come out of the boom culture and growing art scene of Alberta. After working in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, I’m stoked – prairie-style.” Rubinstein has been the features editor at Alberta Venture since December 2004, coming to the business press after serving as associate editor at AlbertaViews magazine (Western Canada’s magazine of the year under his watch) and news editor at Edmonton’s alternative newspaper, Vue Weekly. With a past that also includes newspaper and wire service jobs in Toronto and New Brunswick, and a present that includes freelancing for national magazines, he brings a diverse perspective to the editor’s chair. “I love creative, engaging magazine storytelling. It can provide the context and depth of understanding that other media either can’t or won’t do,” says Rubinstein. “The chance to both reflect and be part of a fascinating place at an exciting time is an editor’s dream. There is no limit to what we can put on the page, because there’s no limit to what this generation in this province is capable of.” As one of Western Canada’s most successful and quality-focused magazine publishing companies, Venture Publishing is proud to be launching an innovative new publication in its 10th anniversary year. “For the past 10 years, we have been charting the spectacular progress of this, the fastest growing economy in North America,” notes Kelly. “Our newest magazine will take us forward into our second decade of business, alongside our energetic and dynamic readers.” www.unlimitedmagazine.com For more information or interviews, please contact: Joyce Byrne jbyrne@albertaventure.com 780-990-0839 x 247 / 866-227-4276 x 247 Dan Rubinstein drubinstein@albertaventure.com 780-990-0839 x 234 / 866-227-4276 x 234
