The Globe and Mail has described Chris Cran as “a superb contemporary abstractionist . . . a big, irrepressibly curious painter, and an utter un-Romantic” and his work as “a dazzling sojourn in sophisticated visuality.” If those descriptions don’t explain his artistry, perhaps being described as “one of the most notable painters in the last few decades” by recent exhibition organizers will.
Cran’s career is being celebrated this year with a major survey exhibition running at The National Gallery of Canada through September 5. It will then travel to the Art Gallery of Alberta and run through January 3, 2017.
Cran’s influence will be felt for many years, and he is passing his knowledge and creativity on to the next generation of artists as an instructor at the Alberta College of Art and Design.
