If there’s a large-scale renewable energy project being built in Alberta, it’s safe to assume that Dan Balaban is behind it. As the CEO of Greengate Power, Balaban has had a hand in putting 150 MW of wind energy into the province’s grid, and he’s poised to deliver an additional 1,450 MW. That includes the recently announced 300 MW Blackspring Ridge project that was sold “construction ready” to Enbridge, one that followed the sale of the Halkirk project to Capital Power in 2011 for $33 million. The company’s model is simple: cut deals with private land owners, get regulatory permits and approvals for wind energy projects and do the engineering before selling them to a company that has the financial firepower to build them out. Environmentally-minded Albertans can only hope Balaban’s company continues to be as successful as it has been so far.
