Bringing together three disparate governing bodies, each with its own long and proud history, was never going to be an easy task. The Certified General Accountants of Alberta, the Certified Management Accountants of Alberta and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta had all spent decades developing their brands through training programs and professional designations, and were protective of their turf. As the CEO of the Alberta Accountants Unification Agency, John Carpenter has done a great deal of the heavy lifting to bring them together, and his work is paying off. In April, the three governing bodies announced a plan to unify under the newly formed Chartered Professional Accountant association. The moves affect the more than 26,500 professional accountants in Alberta, and will lead to a new national education and certification program for all wishing to enter the profession.
