Agrium may not have won the war just yet with Jana Partners, but it won the first big battle when it fended off the New York hedge fund’s attempts to elect people to the company’s board of directors in early April. One of the key generals in Agrium’s war room was Leslie O’Donoghue, who’s been with the company since 1999 and became its chief legal officer and senior vice-president of business development. In that role, O’Donoghue is involved in the company’s deliberations when it comes to mergers, acquisitions, expansions and strategic initiatives – areas that have been particularly busy, and particularly important of late. She is now the Executive Vice President, Corporate Development & Strategy and Chief Risk Officer with the company. Before she arrived at Agrium she was a national partner with the law firm Blake, Cassels & Graydon, and in 2009 she was recognized by the Women’s Executive Network as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women.
