Last October, Edmonton minimalism and its maker spirit got its due. That’s when Edmonton designer Marlorie Urbanovitch won the title of Awarded Designer from Mercedes-Benz’s “Start Up” program, which provides money and mentorship for new fashion talent.

Urbanovitch started making clothes in university and soon realized that she could make a career of it. Of late, she’s brought her politics into her craft, pushing for animal rights and broader consumer knowledge of the dark side of Chinese fur producers for fabrics such as angora.
