Now the chief social innovator for FuseSocial – the newly formed group boosting the collaboration of social organizations in Fort McMurray – Manny Makia is a change-maker. Makia immigrated to Canada, from Cameroon, in 1997. After graduating from university in Ontario, he worked in Nova Scotia before moving to Fort McMurray. He keeps the humility of an immigrant close: Makia is well known for speaking with homeless people in the city, with the ensuing stereotype-challenging results. “I met a guy from Vancouver who has a master’s degree but suffers from mental illness,” he told Fort McMurray Today.
