If you were looking for someone who personified all of Calgary’s business community’s best qualities, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better fit than Mike Tims. Connections to the energy sector? As the former president and current chairman of Peters & Co., one of the city’s pre-eminent investment banking firms, he’s got them in spades. A record of charitable giving? He’s currently the vice-chair of the National Gallery of Canada and a trustee of the University of Calgary Foundation. Recognition from his peers? Tims picked up the Management Alumni Excellence award from the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business in 2000, the Distinguished Business Leader award from the Calgary Chamber of Commerce in 2007 and the Citizen of the Year award from the City of Calgary in 2008. And yet, for all his successes and the crucial role he and his firm have played in financing the city’s energy sector, Tims doesn’t talk up his own book. That’s okay, though. We’ll do it for him.
