In July 2012, Landmark Homes opened its first net-zero showhome. Energy efficient and equipped with solar panels, this Calgary home generates enough juice to offset the energy it uses. For founder and CEO Reza Nasseri, the net-zero home was a natural progression of the business. Landmark Homes, founded in 1977, was one of the first builders to embrace sustainability – something Nasseri feels is the way of the future – and has been making moves towards sustainability since 2007. Every Landmark home is built with energy efficient features such as high-efficiency appliances, low-flow toilets, shower heads and faucets, and triple pane windows. And while homeowners do pay for these features, Landmark believes they will recover their costs through savings on electricity, heating and water. The company is also looking to make net-zero homes the norm by 2015.
