Shane Fildes, Age: 42
Hometown: St, Alberta
Influential Because: His shop is underwriting some of the energy sector’s biggest deals – and dealmakers
As the head of the Global Energy Group at BMO Capital Markets, Shane Fildes is a player in the international energy sector. But he’s also a local product, having grown up in St. Albert and gotten his bachelor of commerce degree at the University of Alberta before heading south, down Highway 2, to join BMO in 1993. Today, he’s responsible for the firm’s investment and corporate banking operations in key energy hubs like London, Beijing, Hong Kong and Melbourne, as well as overseeing BMO’s offices in Calgary and Houston. That meant he was at the table when Progress Energy decided to sell to Petronas for $6 billion in 2012, and on the other side, advising CNOOC, when it closed its $15.1-billion takeover of Nexen a few months later. And while the pace of deal-making slowed in 2013, this year looks like a different story. It’s safe to assume that Fildes and BMO will be at the heart of that action.
