Let’s face it: Public relations aren’t a strong suit for Alberta’s energy sector and the companies in it. That is, with one exception: Cenovus Energy. The company, which was spun out from Encana in 2009, has earned a reputation for its commitment to environmental awareness and its ability to communicate that effectively. It embarked upon one of the most comprehensive and creative advertising campaigns the energy sector has ever seen, a multi-million dollar, multi-platform effort that drew raves from people in the marketing business. The company was named to the most recent Corporate Knights Global 100 list, which recognizes the world’s most sustainable corporations. At the core of that effort is Sheila McIntosh, the company’s executive vice-president of communications and stakeholder relations. She’s worked in the field of communications, media relations and public affairs for more than 30 years, and that experience certainly shows in Cenovus’s proactive approach to meeting its environmental responsibilities and communicating that to the world.
