You might expect that a CEO who sells a company out from under herself might not make our list of the province’s 50 most influential people, but the way Vi Konkle sold The Brick to Leon’s had the hallmarks of a leader making a bold decision, with the best interests of the company and its stakeholders at heart. The Brick’s shareholders did well, and now the combined entity is in a better position than the two individual companies would have been to take on the challenge of Walmart, Target and other U.S. retailers as they expand in the Canadian market. Besides, Konkle hasn’t gone anywhere: She remains the head of Leon’s Brick division, and The Brick retains its brand and its Edmonton head office.
